Cindy Ferreira is a Director of IFAASA. Cindy and her husband struggled to conceive for 5 years and have been through various infertility treatments. She has a strong passion for the research and education components surrounding IFAASA, and believes that there is much yet to be learned about infertility, its effects on society and its causes and symptoms. Cindy is currently in charge of the finance and statutory requirements of IFAASA. She is employed as an accountant in Johannesburg, and resides in Allens Nek.

Mandy Rodrigues is a clinical psychologist in private practice. She has been involved in the field of infertility for eighteen years, working with individuals, groups and couples. Her research has involved looking at the relationship between stress and infertility, culminating in an on-line stress management course and the co-authoring of a book entitled “Time Urgency Perfectionism Stress and Your health.” The findings in this research have been presented and recognized internationally.

Greg Smith

Greg has an LLB, an LLM (Taxation) and a Higher Diploma in International Tax, and is an admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa. After qualifying as an attorney in 2000, Greg chose to specialise in Tax Law. He has over 12 years of specialist experience in tax, having worked as a Tax Consultant for eight years at two “Big 4” accounting firms and at a large law firm, and for over four years at the National Treasury, where he was the Lead Drafter for all amendments to the Income Tax Act, 1962. In particular, Greg was responsible for the drafting of the income tax legislation that provides for medical tax credits. As the drafter of this legislation, he was closely involved not only in its design but also in the formulation of the policy underlying it.

Tabitha is a registered Dietician with 14 years experience in treating Infertility in Men and Women, with special attention to PCOS and Low Sperm Count.

Zoe and Joan are Social Workers who specialize in providing Adoption and related services. They have been in the field of Adoption for over 30 years and during this time, they have been privileged to facilitate hundreds of Adoptions both locally and internationally.

Patrick is a co-founder of Synexa and heads the company’s BioAnalytical Services Unit. He is an immunologist with more than 30 years’ experience in immunopathology.

Robynne is a lawyer by profession with a special interest in surrogacy – and with good reason: Robynne is a mother of a surrogate born baby. After many failed IVFs, 10 years of infertility treatment and three surrogacy cycles, Robynne was eventually blessed with her very special baby born through the wonderful gift of surrogacy.

Meggan Zunckel is a Director and founder of IFAASA. Meggan started advocating for patients rights in 2010 with a submission to the CMS and in 2013 made a motion to Discovery Health at their AGM to motivate for acceptable cover for infertility. She founded IFAASA in 2013 after her and her husband went though many years of infertility treatment.

Tertia, co-founder of South Africa’s leading egg donor agency Nurture, is a recovering infertile and now mother to twins conceived on her 9th IVF + one freebie baby. She has written extensively about her personal experience with infertility, both on her award winning blog and in her book ‘So Close’. Tertia is recognized by the international infertility advocacy group RESOLVE for her outstanding contribution in the family building community. She is co-creator of South Africa’s largest on-line infertility support network (www.fertilicare.org). Tertia is known to have a heart for the infertile and the path they walk to achieve motherhood.

Annchen graduated with B.Sc (Diet) from the University of Stellenbosch in 1985, and went on to complete the Diploma in Hospital Dietetics at the University of the OFS, the equivalent to an honours degree. After nearly 2 decades in private practice she graduated with a master’s degree in nutrition, from the University of Stellenbosch.

Dr Paul Le Roux completed his specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Cape Town. He did his two year fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology at the University of Cape Town / Groote Schuur Hospital. He received numerous merit awards for excellence in his clinical work and research during his training. His original research work in endocrinology has been published in leading international journals such as Human Reproduction and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He has presented many papers at international congresses.

Dr Sascha Edelstein is a non-executive board member of IFAASA. Sascha became involved in IFAASA as a medical expert in reproductive medicine. Having been through assisted reproduction himself, he has a deep understanding of the physical, emotional & financial hurdles that need to be overcome in order to conceive. Sascha is the medical director of the Holistic Assisted Reproduction Treatment (HART) clinic in Cape Town.

Cal Volks is a non-executive board member of IFAASA. She completed her BA Hons and Masters degrees at Rhodes University in 1994 majoring in Psychology. In 2000 she did an Honours degree in Psychology through UNISA, focusing on Counseling and Health Psychology, Family Therapy and Eco-systemic Psychology. Cal has worked as the Director of the HIV AIDS and Inclusivity Unit at the University of Cape Town for 20 years where she has focused on Project Management, Counseling and Psycho Education around Sexuality; Relationships and Stigma.

Uterine Factors

Abnormalities of the uterus can have a significant impact on the ability of a woman to conceive and to carry a pregnancy successfully. Some women have an abnormally developed uterus from birth (congenital) while others may develop a uterine problem due to infection or surgery (acquired).
